Feb 4 'B' Cup Gorge FC v Bays United

Gorge FC 4 - 0 Bays United


On a day even ducks would not like, Gorge FC scored two goals on either side of the break to take this Quarter-Final match.


As Gorge Soccer has a turf field and this was a Cup Match, the game was played despite the weather and a weakened Bays side. Bays United started the match with only 11 players for the first half and were down to 10 at the restart. The flu bug and other commitments severely shortened the Bays bench.

Gorge FC was only missing Tom for this match. The wind and rain were relentless today with wind gusts at times that must have reached 40 km/h.

The first half had Gorge FC defending against the wind and doing a great job. Mateusz made a couple of great saves with wind aided shots. Steve took great goal kicks into the wind and played a great sweeper game. Evan was solid as a rock on defense and when outnumbered, the midfielders moved back to pick up the loose man. David was up and down the pitch involved in the play and only just missed scoring two or three. The back line boys did it again.

The first goal was scored at 8:34 with Ryan sending a pass up to Quinn at the top of the box. He was able to slip between an number of players and send a shot right side that the keeper could not reach.

The second goal came at the 31 minute mark when Jordy spotted Russ wide on the left. Russell went on a good run and close in got a shot off that the keeper could only get part of as it rolled into the net.

The half mercifully came to an end and both teams scurried to the dressing rooms to get warm. The second half would start with the howling wind and rain at our backs, and the boys were eagerly looking forward to filling the net.

The second half started similar to the first with sustained pressure in the Bays end which was compounded by them losing a player due to illness to start the half. On 6 minutes, a great run by David wide on the right was spotted by Jordy. He fed him the ball, and David took it deep before delivering a great cross to the onrushing Mohin. Mohin struck the ball so hard that it bounced in and out with most spectators not realizing that it was a goal.

At the 9 minute mark, Mohin was again in on the goalscoring supplying Quinn with a nice little pass up the middle. Quinn made no mistake shooting hard, far left into the net.

The Bays coaches at this point, being a player down and with other boys fighting illness, conceded the match. The aftergame handshake was a hurried affair and the boys gratefully left the pitch to get warm again.

All other B Cup matches were rained out and I would presume will be played next weekend. Gorge FC awaits the winner of the Salt Spring v Lakehill Quarter-Final.

Notes:
As ugly as the weather was, our play was outstanding. Good passing, good marking, good communication and good ball distribution.
