Sept 17 Gorge FC v Bays United

v

Bays United is a team that has always given us problems. We never seem to have the game in control and invariably it ends in a scrambly tie or a toss up win or loss. Mark was part and parcel of that as he was pretty much impossible to outrun for any breakaways.

Today it was his turn to pressure the Bays defense.

Although being outplayed for long stretches in the first half, Bays was only down by one goal at the interval. Two goals in the second half, both under heavy pressure on the Bays defense finished the scoring for Gorge FC to record a convincing 3 - 0 win.

Early in the first half Quinn and Mark were making good runs into the Bays end but without a finishing touch. The difference in the quality between the two sides was obvious and it did not take too long for Gorge to register the first goal of the afternoon. At the 10 minute mark, some good work in the middle saw Thor send a perfectly weighted ball into the final third for Quinn to run onto and cooly finish.

The occasional foray that Bays had into the Gorge end was effectively cleared out as David, after some early jitters, settled into the sweeper position.

Again today a number of free kicks and corners went wanting and it is sure to be something that Coach Danny will be working on in practice.

The second half started strong for Gorge again with numerous offensive opportunities with the finishing touches just off the mark. Speaking of Mark, throughout the second half, both he and Jordy had at least 5 shots each that just would not drop for them. At the 47 minute point, during another scrambly play, Clayton scuffed a shot into the box, that Quinn picked up and scuffed his own shot towards goal that RJ was able to slide in and direct into the net.

This second goal seemed to open the floodgate of chances with all kinds of long shots, corners, free kicks, passes and breaks that would not go in. On the other end, Steve was pressed into service a couple of times having to stretch wide to get a hand on a shot off of a corner.
At the 73 minute point, a Bays player was brought down in the box with the ref pointing to the penalty spot. Steve faced down the shooter and deflected a hard shot up against the crossbar and then smothered the ball as it fell to the ground.

Two minutes later a nice passing play between Clayton and Jordy saw Jordy take a shot (cross to Mark?) that the keeper misjudged with Mark bearing down on him and it bounced into the net. Good on ya Mark for letting it roll in for Jordy!

Overall the scoring chances had to have been 20 - 4 in Gorge's favour. Good effort boys, another clean sheet.
