Gorge FC 1 - 0 Lakehill


On a Braefoot pitch that had only been opened at Noon today because of all the recent rainfall, a perfect free kick from Tom 4 minutes from time, that dropped right over the line of players into the path of Russell to volley it home was the only goal of the game.

As you can see, the field conditions were not optimal.

A much improved Lakehill team played an aggressive approach to winning the balls in the air and losing their marks. Our style of moving the ball through the midfield was hampered by the poor playing conditions, and although we created good scoring chances, the keeper was up to the task early on.
As the half wore on, the key go to players for Lakehill were marked tightly by Evan and David, and Steve was never really threatened. Good action and runs were happening with Jordy again beating a number of players to go clear in and his attempted chip was foiled by a bounce and it ran wide of the post.
As the whistle blew for half time, it was hard to see if there would be a goal in this game. Our chances were there, but none were going in. Coach Danny shifted his attack around pushing an extra player forward for the start of the second half. He had this luxury as the defense was playing solid.
This paid almost immediate dividends as Gorge FC pushed into the Lakehill end and had sustained pressure for the first part of the second half. A number of corners were won but were not able to be converted for goals. Lakehill was kept out of the middle and fell back on relying on long balls up to their strikers to try and break free. They were tightly marked.
As the second half wore on, it looked like a draw was in order. Some nice passing and through balls were being played up into the Lakehill third, but despite getting some shots goalwards, they could not be turned into goals.
At the 76 minute mark, one of our midfielders were brought down just inside the Lakehill half tight on the right. Tom took the infamous free kick that dropped just over the line for the ever opportunistic Russell to knock it in. A huge sigh of relief from the crowd! The last few minutes were played mostly in Gorge's end, but nothing came of it and the final whistle blew for a close deserved 1-nil Gorge FC victory.
