Gorge FC 2 - 0 Prospect Lake


On a slippery pitch, Gorge FC needed two second half goals to see off Prospect Lake and increase their lead atop the table to 9 points.

Pre-game, Coach Danny warning against taking the opposition lightly.

A scoreless first half did not have too many highlights to look back upon. For the most part, the midfield was in good order controlling the ball, but lacked the vision to use the width of the field and avoid the muddy middle. Many of the balls played thru to the top of the box were not able to be handled properly and frequently were lost to the defenders.
The shots on goal were from distance and were either shot over the net or to the keeper. Our usual standard of set pieces on corners was not finding any takers.
It was a game that needed to be taken by the throat and Gorge FC seemed not to be willing to grasp it.
During the half time break, Coach Danny reminded the boys that any game can be lost by a lucky break, and that Prospect Lake had had more of the quality chances.
An attribute that Danny brings from his playing days is PASSION. It was a quality that was lacking in the first half and was talked about in no uncertain terms. The boys took it upon their shoulders to rectify and committed to a win.
The second half got underway with more purpose for Gorge FC, as they knew that Prospect Lake would come out hard, smelling that an upset might be in the cards, with the way Gorge played in the first half.
Unfortunately for them, Gorge FC's passes were better, the tackles were harder and the boys started using the sides to move the ball.
It was not until the 58 minute mark that Gorge FC put the first one on the board. Jordy from the midfield dribbled the ball up the left and sent a lovely pass up to Quinn at the top of the 18. Quinn deked around his defender and in on the keeper. Faking to his left, he cooly tapped the ball in to the right side of the net.
The whole level of play for Gorge FC moved up a notch. From Ryan, Clayton, RJ and Kevin marking, tackling and feeding the ball up intelligently from midfield, to David and Evan shutting down the offensive threats through to the strikers and attacking midfielders, the play had improved.
It took until the 75 minute mark for Gorge to put this one away. A nice corner from the left from Quinn to Jordy on the short side saw Jordy using his left foot, one time it into the net.
The final few minutes had Gorge FC holding their own for the final whistle.

Notes: Steve was not threatened but for one point blank shot right at him. Tom was on the sidelines with a slight groin strain but did well as a cheerleader. Mateusz, Russell and Mark were unlucky to not find the net. Mohin was doing his usual quiet job and neutralizing his man. Josh played both defense and midfield and was solid. Finally Thor, our big man in the middle, made some solid tackles and is making that part of the field his own.
